Deadly Sevens is a local clothing brand that is testing the idea of using a product brand or logo as the driving component for all graphic designs. This concept was transferred into the design of this wall as well. The project was to build a display wall that had installation qualities as well as functionality. The wall consists of a single shelf that runs the length of the wall and tapers out in the middle to allow for back lighting. It also has a hidden storage compartment at one end.

		<description>BlackBOX-project
Active patterns

Design/Fabrication
Spring 11’
Collaborator[s]: Ian McHone + Nick Puckett [Altn research]

“Project BlackBox is a production device which allows the creation of 1:1 panels of shape-memory polymers and hydrogels. The goal for the device is to transfer properties and behaviors developed as “material samples” and scale them up to usable “material prototypes”. In collaboration with the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the University of Kentucky we designed and constructed a machine that would cure the polymers or hydrogels using a UV light source. When the chemicals used to make the materials are mixed they are in a liquid form, and the UV light hardens it to a material similar to plastic.

The process began by researching methods used by large scale production facilities of UV cured materials. Typically these companies used a fixed bar of curing light and passed the sheets of material under the light using a conveyor belt. This system was not an option for us due to the space and budget limitations associated with this approach. In the end we decided to invert this system by fixing the material and moving the light source over it similar to a scanner. We are currently in the process of scaling the operation up to its full potential of 18″X32″ sheets. This size is important as it represents the maximum sheet size that can be cut on our laser cutter.

The goal for this first stage of development is to create a modular facade shading system created from the polymer which allows the material to respond directly to the heat without any mechanical or electrical input”. - Nick Puckett.
Responsibilities included robot assemble and conceptualization/visualization of skin solution.

Collaborator[s]: Ian McHone + Rives Rash.

Flyash is a fine powder that is a byproduct of coal power plants. Kentucky produces roughly 90% of its energy from burning coal thus the material is easily obtainable. Flyash is an inexpensive replacement for portland cement; it also improves the strength, segregation and ease of pumping into molds, which allows for a lot of freedom in design. The seminar focused on these characteristics in order to exploit the full potential of form and mold making, starting with a simple form and evolving into a controlled complex shape.

		<description>New Urban Ground

Architecture
Summer 11’
Collaborator[s]: Ian McHone.

With a large void still in existence in the very center of downtown Lexington, we took the initiative to propose a project that would both address the void and supply the downtown with much needed commercial real estate. The previous and existing state of urban city blocks are buildings surrounded by a slim perimeter of public domain, i.e. sidewalks. The space for personnel and mass interactions in the urban context are limited to parks and bus stop benches. In acknowledgment of this condition, “New Urban Ground” attempts to solve this by elevating the building to maintain the current void as
well as creating open space on top in order to increase the potential for human interaction.

Product Design
Spring 09'
Conspirator[s]: Ian McHone + Alex Pincus

The premise of the project was simple: take a piece of garbage/trash and make it into a functional product with aesthetic quality. The salvaged materials here were fast food drink carriers, collected from a local McDonalds, cut and reshaped into a Lantern. The drink carriers though simple in function, allowed for a high level of formal complexity; once cut and reshaped only then was the potential of the material revealed and what is realized here as a lantern is only one of the many potentials.
